Mark “Bomber” Thompson says of his days smoking ice: “I was a bad boy”.
The former AFL star and premiership coach gave a tearful TV interview on Monday night, talking about how his life spiralled out of control.
Thompson told A Current Affair he was “completely lost” during his period of drug abuse and “didn’t have much hope for the future”.
“I was fighting a fight I couldn’t win,” he said.
The 57-year-old said he turned to ice to help numb the pain.
He said he did not want to comment on how much ice he was smoking at his lowest point.
But he insisted he was never dealing drugs.
“At no point did I ever sell drugs,” he said.
The TV interview followed a series of stories by Herald Sun journalist Michael Warner in 2020, where Thompson explained the depths of his drug hell and how he was rebuilding his life.
He is billed to speak at a House of Truth event on Friday to support Bridge of Hope, a Melbourne charity that helps young women after they leave out-of-home care.
In his A Current Affair interview, he spoke of the toll the Essendon supplements saga had taken and said it contributed to him being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
In 2019, Thompson was sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order and fined $3,500 after a magistrate found him guilty of four counts of drug possession.
A haul of illicit drugs, including 400 ecstasy tablets, was found at his Port Melbourne warehouse.
Thompson’s housemate at the time, bikie Thomas Windsor, was arrested and later jailed for drug trafficking.
Thompson told A Current Affair he regretted the episode: “If you go back in time should I let that guy into my house? No. It happened.”
He said he determined to fight back and rebuild his life.
“I don’t know what round it is but I’ve thrown enough punches mate and I’m raising my body off the chair in the corner, putting myself back in the ring. I’m winning the fight.”
