Josh Fraser worth a third-round pick

UPDATE 4.11pm: COLLINGWOOD has received a third-round draft pick as compensation for losing former No.1 pick Josh Fraser to Gold Coast.

UPDATE 4.11pm: COLLINGWOOD has received a third-round draft pick as compensation for losing former No.1 pick Josh Fraser to Gold Coast.

The Suns yesterday recruited Fraser and Lion Jared Brennan as its final two uncontracted players.

The AFL announced the clubs' compensation today, with the Lions getting a first-round draft selection for Brennan.

The Lions have lost Brennan and Michael Rischitelli but now have a raft of first-round draft picks.

In a bizarrely complicated deal, the Lions gave the Gold Coast their compensation pick along with pick 10 and pick 28.

In return the Lions received pick five, pick 25 - which the Suns received from Collingwood for Andrew Krakouer - and pick 27, along with Rohan Bewick, the 20-year-old nephew of former Essendon player Darren Bewick.

Bewick played for West Perth in the WAFL this season and was listed by the Suns under a rule that allows the new club to pick up 10 players who have previously been on AFL lists or have nominated for the draft, even if they were not selected.

Lions talent manager Rob Kerr said he was delighted with the outcome.

"Being able to secure pick No.5 proved a significant upgrade for us," Kerr said.

"There will be some elite talent among the early selections this year, and we were determined to push up into the early bracket to be certain of drafting one of those players.

"It really places this club in a strong position for what will be a compromised draft.

"We are now looking at having four selections in the top 30 or so which gives us the option to possibly retain the compensation pick we received for Michael Rischitelli to use in the future.

"Involving Jared Brennan as part of a deal with the Gold Coast has essentially elevated us five spots in the all-important first round of the national draft and also delivered us another first round pick, the first pick of the second round as well as promising young wingman Rohan Bewick."

If that isn't confusing enough, the Lions could receive more picks for disgrunted midfielder Justin Sherman, who has said he wants to go to the Bulldogs.

Sherman has turned his back on a reported four-year deal to join Sydney and if a deal with the Dogs is not finalised he could be at Brisbane next season.

Brennan and Fraser join Rischitelli, Nathan Bock, Nathan Krakouer, Campbell Brown, Jarrod Harbrow and Gary Ablett as uncontracted players poached by the Suns.

Gold Coast football manager Marcus Ashcroft said Fraser would add leadership to a young list and partner exciting ruck prospect Zac Smith.

“As a former vice-captain of Collingwood and Grand Final player Josh will also be a leader among our young group,” Ashcroft said.

“With 200 AFL games under his belt he is a valuable pick up for us as we look to build a competitive team for next year. We are very pleased to have been able to secure a mature player of his type and with his level of experience.”

Brennan, who was also courted by Carlton and Essendon, said he was "thrilled" with how the trade had panned out.

"I’m really looking forward to a fresh start, and to be able to further my career in Queensland is a real bonus. It’s going to be an exciting time.”

Fraser said he was excited by a fresh start.

“I’ve played a lot of football at a successful club over 11 years and although I still reckon I’ve got plenty to offer as a player, I’m really excited about working with the up and coming guys to try to help them be the best they can be.”

Brennan and Fraser are on leave and will join the Suns for pre-season training later this month.
