HAWTHORN has clinched the deal to secure North Melbourne ruckman David Hale.
As reported in today's Herald Sun, the trade was secured minutes ago in a swap for the Hawks’ compensation pick for Campbell Brown, which comes at the end of the first round.
It beat a rival bid from Melbourne, which offered pick No.32 for the big man.
The Hawks also handed over pick 71 in the draft and received pick 52 from the Roos.
Melbourne list manager Tim Harrington was last night firm on 32 being the best the club could do, declaring the Demons were in no mood to "over-spend".
The Hawks stepped up their bid for Hale yesterday, with coach Alastair Clarkson getting involved in talks.
“We’re obviously pleased David has elected to move to Hawthorn Football Club,” Hawthorn list manager Chris Pelchen said.
“We see his ability to play a hybrid role as a ruckman-cum-forward as a really positive addition to our team ahead of the 2011 AFL season. Both his experience and versatility can provide a great benefit to our developing ruck group at the Hawks.
“As a first-round draft selection in the much vaunted 2001 national draft, David’s ability has been widely recognised and resulted in him being a much sought after recruit in the 2010 AFL trade period."
The Roos issued a statement saying Hale had been "a magnificent player during his time at Arden St and is highly respected among players and staff."
"The club wishes David all the best for the future and thanks him for his contributions and efforts," the Roos said.
