Jack Watts stupid and brainless for having Oktoberfest antics filmed, Mark Robinson writes

To put it simply, Jack Watts’ actions in Munich were stupid and the decision to have his antics filmed was “brainless” and although no one wants to be the fun police, the white powder video can’t be ignored, Mark Robinson writes.

Jack Watts at Oktoberfest

It was Forrest Gump who said “stupid is as stupid does’’.

He could’ve said it about Jack Watts.

His actions at Germany’s Oktoberfest in Munich last year, which were exposed on a leaked online video on Sunday, were plainly stupid.

The video shows a clearly drunk Watts at a bar, snorting a local and legal white powder off a woman’s breasts while dressed in Gerrman garb for the occasion.

If it was Chevy Chase in European Vacation no one would care.

Because it was an AFL footballer, everyone is coming down heavy.

Only because of the stupidity.

While players should have red flags ready to spring when it comes to videos, Watts is asking his cameraman mate: “You ready … you ready.’’ Then he hooked in.

The act itself is largely harmless, for they were consenting parties. Having it filmed, which opened it up to being distributed — is brainless.

Watts’ European Vacation fun came back to bite him on the bum on Sunday.

On Monday, he was almost in tears as he spoke of the video.

“It’s a pretty shocking look and I’m really disappointed with myself and can imagine having my parents and my sisters watching a video like that, it’s not a great feeling,” Watts said.

“The pain and burden I’ve caused for the club and the supporters and my teammates and coaches, that’s probably what hurts me the most.’’

It was a brief and hopefully heartfelt response from the popular Watts.

For all the good mobile phones have created, especially capturing the interaction between players and the fans, the flip side is there will be a Jake Carlisle and Shane Mumford, and to a lesser extent Jack Watts, ready to claim the mantle of Mr Stupidity.

“I’m upset someone feels the need to video that,” Watts said. “And feels the need to send it on, but that’s the world we live in — and I have to realise that.”

The AFLPA would be shaking its head in disbelief.

Players are told and told again about being aware of their environment and mobile phones.

And here’s Jack demanding he be filmed.

Despite the substance being legal, Watts will probably be fined $5000 for conduct unbecoming.

REVEALED: HOW PORT ALMOST SIGNED SHANE CRAWFORD WITH MACCAS

The “look’’ is everything in this world of optics and it is a disappointing look.

Could you imagine if it was Patrick Dangerfield or Patrick Cripps? Heaven forbid, it was Dusty Martin?

That Watts is a loveable larrikin doesn’t excuse his behaviour, and especially now that most football fans, young and old have seen it.

What are kids asking their parents?

What is Port Adelaide, who like all clubs profess to be a family club, supposed to say to sponsors and members?

Watts trained with his teammates on Monday following the release of the video.

No one wants to be the fun police, but it can’t be ignored.

Port Adelaide was made aware of the video about midday on Sunday and soon after Watts was on the phone to Port’s head of football Chris Davies.

The club was deeply disappointed and there will be ramifications for Watts.

On Monday it was understood Watts was talking to coach Ken Hinkley and the leadership group separately.

Hinkley was disappointed but supportive.

His reaction was to whack him with one arm and put the other around him, for Watts was said to be at a low ebb when he arrived at the club on Monday. He later trained with his teammates.

Watts said he had lived “a pretty shocking 24 hours” since the video’s release.

“But I am trying to keep some perspective in the whole situation,” he said. “The fact I was not doing anything illegal … and I’ve made a lot of changes since that video in my life. Really positive (changes) and I’m looking forward to continuing that.”
