Exciting midfielder-forward Zane Duursma produced another bumper game for Gippsland Power on the weekend as he begins to hit his straps following a disjointed start to the season.
A top-10 AFL draft prospect this year, Duursma played games for the AFL Academy side, Casey in the VFL and his local club Foster in the early part of the season.
However, the 17-year-old has settled back with the Power in the Coates Talent League over the past three weeks and has been playing a starring role.
Primarily used as a forward last year, Duursma has worked on his fitness and has pushed up the ground with the Power this season.
He is splitting his time roughly 60-40 between midfield and forward roles.
Duursma racked up 19 disposals (12 contested), six clearances, nine score involvements and kicked four goals for a total of 159 SuperCoach ranking points in a 49-point win over the Greater Western Victoria Rebels on Sunday.
He has now averaged 22 disposals and has kicked 10 goals across the past three weeks.
“It’s starting to work for him,” Gippsland Power talent manager Scott McDougal said.
“He knows how to take a mark forward, he knows how to kick goals and be really proactive in that area. For us to get the balance right between forward and mid, that’s going to help him.”
Duursma is the younger brother of Port Adelaide’s Xavier Duursma and Power AFLW midfielder Yasmin Duursma.
Gippsland ruckman Lachlan Smith also had a big game on Sunday with 17 disposals, 21 hit-outs, five clearances, nine score involvements and three goals.
Smith measures 202cm and is strongly built, despite not turning 18 until October.
Northern Knights ruckman William Green was another standout over the weekend, logging 22 disposals, 17 hit-outs, eight score involvements and two goals in a win over the Murray Bushrangers.
Green stands 204cm and only joined the Knights in 2021 after previously focusing on cricket as a junior.
