A-list actors, sporting champions and business magnates known in almost every Victorian household were behind some of 2023’s most impressive sales.
Ricky Ponting squared up to a lavish new wicket in Toorak after hitting his former home in Brighton for $15.3m.
Industry sources say the former Australian captain and his wife Rianna purchased the six-bedroom mansion for close to $20.75m.

The Pontings sold the seven-bedroom residence at 17 St Ninians Rd in June which they bought in 2013 for $9.25m, according to PropTrack records.
Top actor Guy Pearce also reeled in a buyer for his Middle Park home, who bought the abode for $8.65m.
The Geelong-raised actor famous for television and film appearances in Neighbours, The King’s Speech and Iron Man 3 listed the four-bedroom pad in July with initial $8.5m-$9.35m price hopes.
A couple from the Mornington Peninsula bought the house at 341-343 Richardson St as they were attracted by the block’s 748sq m size, position and orientation, Jellis Craig Port Phillip’s Simon Gowling said at the time.
Pearce purchased two Edwardian-era properties in 1995 and 2004 then connected them to create the one property.
Iconic tile magnate Frank Walker and his wife Rhonda also offloaded their mansion in Toorak for $23.5m.
Walker, known for his famous “Hello, Frank Walker from National Tiles,” radio advertisements, purchased the 1350sq m property at 50 Clendon Rd with his wife around a decade ago which was later restored by the couple’s daughter Amy Spargo who founded Maine House Interiors.
“She’s done an incredible job and just brought it right into the 21st century. Everything is brand new,” Walker said then.
He added that the residence’s Italian-imported Carrara marble floor tiles were “the best of the best.”
Andy Lee, The Hundred host and half of the famous radio duo Hamish and Andy, sold a Richmond residence at auction for $3.13m — around $430,000 above what had been expected.
Fletchers auctioneer Michael Richardson brought the hammer down after the home at 18 Tennyson St was called on the market at around $2.7m.
Lee had earlier revealed plans to renovate the derelict Hawthorn manor he bought with partner Rebecca Harding in 2021 for $8m.
Television personalities Ed Kavalee and wife Tiffiny Hall sold their single-fronted weatherboard house at 89 Eglinton St, Moonee Ponds for $1.5m in August prior to its auction.
Comedian Kavalee is a regular on Network 10’s Have You Been Paying Attention? and Hall is a personal trainer, author, journalist, podcaster and television personality.
The couple released a book together titled A First Time For Everything about their first year as parents in 2019.
Radio and television veteran Jo Stanley and producer husband Darren McFarlane’s Elsternwick home also sold ahead of its auction in August for $4.167m.
Stanley spent 10 years co-hosting Fox FM’s top-rating breakfast show with Matt Tilley from 2003 and now appears on Seven Network’s House of Wellness.
The Spanish Mission-style residence at 34 Riddell Pde sold well above its $3.3m-$3.6m price hopes.
At the time of the sale, Rendina Real Estate Kensington’s Lou Rendina said the house was “a beautiful home, renovated with three bedrooms.”
“It’s a lovely home within a walking distance to Puckle St and Moonee Ponds West Primary School,” he said.
Another person who kicked goals in the housing market this year was Bomber-turned-Lion Joe Daniher after selling his Victoria-era Clifton Hill house for $3.675m in April.
The footy heavyweight’s former four-bedroom residence at 13 South Tce was built in the 1890s and has period features such as an Italianate facade, wide balcony terrace, marble open fireplaces and polished floorboards.
Daniher’s abode overlooking Darling Gardens initially had a $3.4m-$3.7m price guide, and Jellis Craig Fitzroy partner Antony Woodley said it sold to “a local family looking to upsize.”
AFL great and radio presenter Jonathan Brown and former Essendon player Devon Smith also sold up, as did three-time Melbourne Cup winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy.
