A senior Liberal MP has hit out at Bernie Finn over a Facebook post in which he appeared to agree with Trump’s false claims about election fraud.

A senior Liberal MP has hit back at controversial pro-Trump comments made by colleague Bernie Finn, with the Victorian wing of the party to speak with the Western Metropolitan MP over his statements.

State Opposition transport spokesman and Coalition leader in the Legislative Council David Davis was on Friday asked to respond to social media posts by Mr Finn that had sparked outrage.

In Facebook posts made hours before rioters stormed the US capitol, he appeared to agree with elements of false election rigging claims made by Trump supporters over the past three months.

“I fundamentally disagree with them,” Mr Davis said.

“I don’t know why Bernie has made those comments. My view is that they are wrong.

“The election result is very clear ... the community is horrified by what they’re seeing (in the US).

“We’ll be talking to him and the truth of the matter is I certainly disagree with his views.”

Mr Davis said Mr Finn was not a member of the Shadow Cabinet and was not sure if he aspired to holding more senior positions in the party.

“People are allowed to speak but having said that I think it’s incumbent to say when we think they’re wrong,” he said.

Mr Finn sparked outrage after a controversial Facebook post in which he appeared to agree with false claims by US President Donald Trump’s about election fraud.

Mr Finn posted to the social media site ahead of a push by some Republicans not to count electoral votes for President-elect Joe Biden and just hours before Pro-Trump rioters had made their way into the Capitol building.

He wrote that Mr Trump would make history for one of two reasons.

“He will fight off a concerted effort by globalists, big corporations, big media, the Washington Establishment and the mad Left to improperly remove him from the Oval Office,” Mr Finn said.

“Or he will succumb to the aforementioned Deep State forces - but not before exposing corruption undermining the American political system.”

Mr Trump’s claims of voter fraud and election rigging have been proven false and rejected by multiple courts since the US election in November.

Screenshots of the posts were quickly shared across social media and prompted a significant backlash.

After the riots, Mr Finn later posted that did not support the events at the US Capitol but then went on to make further contentious claims.

“We wouldn’t have to wait two months for violence if Trump had won,” he wrote.

“Antifa terrorists were ready to riot, loot and burn on election night.”
