Yarra Blvd road sign ripped out when an obvious blunder was realised

There was a clear sign that something wasn’t right when this popped up in Kew. Can you spot the problem?

It was a clear sign something had gone wrong.

A new road sign was erected on Yarra Boulevard on Monday, as part of the $110 million upgrade of the Chandler Highway.

But it was stuck “smack bang in the middle” of a share cycling and footpath.

It lasted only a matter of hours before being labelled an “absolute joke” and being ripped out on Tuesday.

The Herald Sun understands that the sign was installed in the correct location, but was supposed to be fixed to a ‘cantilever mast’ rather than the footpath-obstructing poles.

A Major Road Projects Victoria spokesman said a search “to find a new solution” was on.

“Newly installed directional signage on Yarra Boulevard in Kew has now been removed after we were notified of an issue,” he said.

“Due to an oversight, the sign was installed in a way that obstructed the path and work is now underway to find a new solution.”

Workers were able to safely remove the sign while the footpath was still closed, meaning it posed no danger to cyclists or pedestrians.

Software developer Michael Chandler said the installation was “an absolute job” and showed “contempt to walkers and cyclists”.

“Get it sorted,” he tweeted.

Roads Minister Jaala Pulford did just that, tweeting a photo of the sign being removed just 16 hours later.

An impressed Mr Chandler added: “Love the speedy turnaround. Well done.”

Liberal Member for Kew Tim Smith described it as an “embarrassing” blunder.

“I’d love to know who was the bright spark who decided to install that sign on a shared path,” he said.
