A pedestrian has died in hospital after she was allegedly struck by a reversing car in Melbourne's CBD on May 26.

The 44-year-old Richmond woman was crossing Flinders St, near the intersection of Highlander Lane, after disembarking a tram when she was struck by a dark-coloured Mazda CX-3 about 9.30am on Thursday.

Police estimate the car had been illegally reversing along the busy thoroughfare for around 25 to 30 metres.

The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, but she died of her injuries on July 9.

Detective Sergeant Peter Romanis, from the Major Collision Investigation Unit, said the 33-year-old Ormond driver was taken to West Melbourne police station after the incident.

He was released on that afternoon, pending further inquiries. No charges have been laid.

“As to the reason why he was reversing, it is currently unknown,” Sgt Romanis said.

“We haven’t been able to ascertain the reason why. We are hoping he might be able to shed some light on that.”

The man remained at the scene and was tested for alcohol and drugs, which is standard practice in serious road incidents.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit set up a crime scene opposite the Melbourne Aquarium on Thursday.

One line of inquiry that detectives will probe will be whether the man missed the entry to Highlander Lane, or a parking garage along Flinders St.

SES crews were deployed to assist with setting up crime scene preservation tents.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives continue to investigate and are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage.
