EXCESSIVE speed is being investigated as a factor in a crash which ripped a luxury car in three, killing a young woman.
Police say the driver, 25, from Dandenong was driving a blue BMW sedan south along the Nepean Hwy at Cheltenham about 5.30am on Saturday when she lost control and hit a traffic light.

The woman, the car’s sole occupant, died at the scene.
A green P-plate was visible among wreckage strewn more than 100m along six lanes of the highway near Southland shopping centre.
Sen-Sgt Warren Francis-Pester said the crash was among the worst he had ever seen.
“I’ve been in the police force for about 30 years and ... I’ve never seen debris spread over six lanes of highway,” he said.
“The early indications here are that the speed was excessive.”
Nearby resident Ben Grimm, 27, was in bed when he heard the crash.
“It was a loud noise, like glass and metal slamming into each other for a good five to 10 seconds,” Mr Grimm said.
Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
