EXCLUSIVE: SHANE Martin says a premiership and the Norm Smith medal are the next things on the list for his son.

Dustin video called his dad in Auckland, New Zealand, after he took home the Brownlow Medal last night.

Shane was emotional as he received the brief call before Dustin went off to other commitments.

He congratulated his son on a great speech, in which Dustin said he loved him and that he would see him soon.

When asked who would win the Norm Smith medal, Shane said: “My son, hopefully.”

Shane said the Brownlow win was emotional.

“It’s pretty emotional. I thought he wasn’t going to win it, it wasn’t a rollover but he got there,” he said.

“He held his head pretty high and he was proud of everyone that was involved in his journey of football.”

The Herald Sun joined Shane in Auckland to watch the medal count, with the proud dad admitting to nerves throughout the count as Dustin and Patrick Dangerfield, who was ineligible due to suspension, went head to head on votes.

Dustin took out the count with 36 votes, including a record 11 best on ground performances.

Shane was seemingly left speechless by his son’s Brownlow win, instead breaking into a giant grin and fist-pumping in victory.

Wife Adriana was the first to speak, saying: “Yes, got it.”

Shane’s first words in response to Dustin’s win were: “Good boy.”

“I’m glad he beat Dangerfield fair and square but hats off to Dangerfield for being a true sportsman to his team and not challenging his suspension,” Shane said.

But while his dad will not be at this Saturday’s game, Dustin’s brother Tyson is flying in from Barcelona to take a seat at the MCG.

“His brothers are so proud of him, it means a lot that he’s coming back from Spain,” he said.

Shane said he was quietly confident that Richmond would beat the Crows.

Martin predicts more glory for Dusty

“If they come out like they did the last two weeks I think Adelaide have got to be worried,” he said.

“Richmond have improved in the past two years. I think Dimma has done an excellent job, he’s chucked out the anchovies and put in a few chillies and they’ve got the perfect recipe now.”

Shane also paid tribute to Dustin’s manager Ralph Carr.

“Words can’t explain how good that guy has been to myself and Dustin,” he said.

“He is a manager you want on your side. I’m so glad we chose to go with Ralph Carr.”

Earlier today, Shane said his son Dustin was more focused on winning a premiership with his teammates than claiming the spotlight as the AFL’s standout player of 2017.

Martin, the raging Brownlow Medal favourite, will get that chance on Saturday against the Adelaide Crows at the MCG.

“He’s more interested in winning the grand final with his teammates than an individual award,” he said.

“He’s proved that in the way he has played this year.

“Dustin is more interested in the team. The Brownlow is a great honour but he wants an honour for his whole team.”

The Herald Sun is with Shane in New Zealand watching tonight’s count.

Shane said he was disappointed he was not in Melbourne.

“We’d love to be there, any father would,” he said.

Shane said he hoped Dustin would win the Brownlow outright over the suspended Patrick Dangerfield.

Martin was the form player of the competition but Dangerfield’s suspension for a rough tackle took out his main rival in the count.

“I’d like to judge it on the matches before Dangerfield was suspended,” he said.

“But all in all I wish Dangerfield had have been a contender because it would be better for the sport.

“I think the votes will show before that incident Dustin was ahead.”

Shane said he respected Dangerfield, who decided against challenging his ban which could have lead to a longer suspension.

“I feel he was cheated, the tackle he got done for was petty,” he said.

“Hats off to Dangerfield for being a sportsman when he chose to do the right thing by his team and he didn’t challenge his suspension.”

Shane Martin was deported from Australia last year for his links with the Rebels motorcycle club.

Martin nervous wait

He was stopped from attending tonight’s ceremony in Melbourne after the Federal Government rushed through a new law this month that keeps him out of the country.

Shane said that he was hopeful that Dustin would take out the award.

“I’m hoping he will take the chocolates tonight,” he said.

“To be honest after the first two games, from there all the way through I reckon he’s pulled more three votes than anyone in the league.”

Shane said that Adelaide’s Rory Sloane might also poll well.

“Rory Sloane might be a dark horse,” he said.

Shane said that he hoped Dustin would add to the trophy cabinet later this week.

“There’s still the grand final to go and the Norm Smith,” he said.
