Why Docklands’ Marvel Stadium will go ahead with $225m revamp despite AFL season on hold

The AFL has halted the 2020 season, sought financial aid and stood down staff due to the coronavirus pandemic — but the $225m Marvel Stadium redevelopment will still happen. Here’s why.

The AFL and state government will push ahead with plans for a major redevelopment of Marvel Stadium despite the footy season grinding to a halt.

The AFL has sought financial aid and had to stand down staff as the economic reality of the coronavirus pandemic bites.

But the Andrews government has assured AFL House that plans for a $225 million revamp of the 20-year-old Docklands stadium will proceed despite uncertain economic times.

The government and AFL both said the work was certain to go ahead, with funding fully budgeted and revised redevelopment plans being drawn up.

AFL spokesman Jay Allen said: “The Marvel Stadium and surrounding Docklands precinct upgrade is a self-contained project, with funding committed specifically.

“And as such it continues to function, all be it remotely for the interim as the community faces an unprecedented challenge.’’

Government spokesman Shaun Phillips said funds for the project were locked in.

“The government has made a commitment to provide $225 million towards the redevelopment of Marvel Stadium to benefit sports fans and the wider community,’’ he said.

“We have not been informed of any change to the AFL’s plans regarding the delivery of the project.”

The redevelopment is expected to breath new life into the Docklands region with initial plans including open air bars, restaurants, a running track, ballroom and new waterside precinct.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said the revamp would make it “the most fan-friendly multipurpose stadium in the world,”.

The AFL has used Marvel Stadium as a safety net for a deal with banks to keep the league and clubs alive, with the $1 billion asset helping secure a $500 million line of credit.

The state government announced funding for the redevelopment in April 2018, in a deal locking the AFL Grand Final in at the MCG until 2057.
