MELBOURNE’S rail network is set for a makeover, with a new colour-coded line system to bring Victoria’s transit information in line with cities such as New York and London.
Similar to the colour coding system seen on transport maps around the world, the new map will do away with the current blue and yellow design, with a multicoloured graphic to take its place.
Why Melbourne’s train network is rated the worst in Australia
In another first for the map, it will now also feature the networks regional lines.
The Premier took to the /r/Melbourne subreddit last night to announce the new map, which will be rolled out across the network next year.
“Given /r/Melbourne’s interest in all things public transport, I thought you should be among the first to see Victoria’s new train network map,” he wrote.
“We’ve all gotten used to the old yellow and blue diagram over the years, but it has its problems and it’s past its use-by date. This rework is more modern and makes clearer which trains go where.
“It also properly integrates the metro and regional networks, because the country is just as important a part of our transport system as anywhere else.”
Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allen echoed the Premier’s remarks today, saying the “simple change” would make it quicker and easier for people to find their way around Melbourne and Victoria.
“By showing at a glance which lines are which when they leave the loop, passengers will be able to see when they can stay on a train to connect to a new line,” she said.
