Upswing for Melbourne weather after devastating downpours

Balmy weather is on the way for Victoria after hammering rain caused devastating flooding in parts of the state. Here’s how the rest of the week will look.

‘Absolutely good news’: Rain eases in parts of Victoria

Victorians are set for a reprieve from wild and wet weather as balmy conditions set in across the state.

It comes as residents in Seymour and Yea were told to evacuate over rising floodwaters on Monday, after incessant rain wreaked havoc across the state.

From Tuesday, Melbourne will see mostly clear and dry conditions, reaching mid 20s with partly cloudy conditions.

The balmy weather will continue as Friday reaches a top of 31C with mostly sunny conditions.

Christie Johnson from the Bureau of Meteorology said the rain would “eventually ease” after Monday’s downpour.

“The rest of today, we will see heavy and intense rainfall, particularly over the eastern part of the state as the storm slowly moves across,” she said.

“This includes a severe thunderstorm warning for the north east part of the state, in between Echuca and Wangaratta.

“In Melbourne, heavy falls will be focused more around the Dandenongs and Yarra Ranges. This afternoon will be focused on Gippsland, which remains at risk of heavy rainfall and possible storms.”

Ms Johnson said severe weather would clear in Victoria from Tuesday.

“There is the potential for showers and isolated thunderstorms in the east but not severe weather,” she said.

“We expect the flooding to last the next few days at least in parts of the state.

“We currently have major flood warnings for the Goulburn River and Campaspe River. There may be further flood warnings issued as floodwaters drain into rivers.”

Ms Johnson said from Wednesday the state will remain dry for a couple of days.

“We will have a couple of dry and cool days and then as we move towards the end of the week it will warm up and the humidity will increase,” she said.

“Then a few showers are forecasted for the weekend.”
