Victorian dining and entertaining voucher program returns

Victorians will receive cash back on dining and entertainment across the state under a new scheme. Here’s how to claim.

Melbourne's dining voucher scheme is about 'enticing people' back to the CBD

Victorians will once again be able to claim cash back from eating out or going to the theatre, with the state government to return its popular rebate program.

Industry Recovery and Support Minister Ben Caroll will on Monday revealed the dining and entertaining voucher program, introduced to help stimulate post-Covid economy, will be available over spring and the start of summer.

Open from today, it allows customers to claim 25 per cent of their money back when they spend at least $40 out and about in the state.

This includes meals and pubs and restaurants, tickets to live music gigs or art shows and entries to galleries or amusement parks.

Each person can claim up to $125 back over the life of the scheme and can make multiple claims till they hit this cap.

About $25m has been put towards the scheme, with rebates available until December 16 or all the money has been exhausted.

“Whether it’s booking a table for lunch or heading to a live music event, this cash-back program puts money back into people’s pockets and supports hardworking businesses across Victoria,” Mr Carroll said.

“This program also helps build business and consumer confidence, while supporting jobs and boosting the state’s economy.”

The rebate scheme was first introduced in March this year and Victorians claimed $32 million in just three months.

Trips to the movies and to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child drew the biggest amount of claims.

“With a blockbuster summer of major events upon us, we’re providing Victorians even more reasons to get out and enjoy everything the state has to offer – while saving money and supporting local businesses,” Major Events Minister Steve Dimopolous said.

Waterfront Restaurant manager Alfred Hidri said that during his eight-year tenure working at the venue, the rebate was one of the best things the government has done.

“It was a good deal for customers when they first introduced it, and for regional people, it will be an extra incentive to come into the city.”

Mr Hidri said that reinstating the vouchers for customers, following the popularity of the scheme in March and April, was a very welcome change heading into summer.

Daniel Omato, owner of Melbourne cafe Lux Foundry, also welcomed the return of the program.

”There are many businesses that will benefit from this boost,” he said.

“The news is timely as we head into the school holidays, and we look forward to seeing more Victorians out enjoying a meal with their family and friends.”
