Victorian beaches with the most shark sightings this summer

A great white and white pointer are among the monster sharks that have been spotted in Victorian waters this summer.

Two monster sharks, including a great white measuring approximately 4.5m, have been spotted in Victorian waters so far this year.

A 4.5m long white pointer was spotted from a fishing boat, about 800 metres off Winki Pop on Victoria’s Surf Coast, on 17 January.

The other mammoth shark was spotted off Rye about 300m from shore.

Only one shark, measuring more than 4m in length, was spotted in Victorian waters last year.

It was spotted off 13th beach, near Barwon Heads, last October.

The shark sightings were reported on Dorsal; an app which allows for shark sightings to be uploaded to a database.

Anyone accessing the app can see the latest shark attacks anywhere in Australia.

Dorsal co-founder Sarah Beardmore said Victoria’s two consecutive large shark sightings were uncommon.

“You don’t usually get two large sharks in Victoria in such a short period of time,” she said.

Ms Beardmore said most shark sightings were reported to Dorsal on average in January, as more people were in the water.

Despite the latest sightings, 2023 has been quieter for shark sightings compared to this time last year where there had been 15 sightings in Victorian waters.

Among the January 2022 shark sightings was an encounter with a bull shark.

Ms Beardmore said since that encounter, there’s been no there’s been no bull shark sightings in Victoria reported to Dorsal.
