Taylor Swift fans without tickets are being told to stay away from sold-out Melbourne concerts amid concerns thousands of diehard Swifties are planning to “Taylor-gate” the gigs.
The trend for Swift super fans to descend on venues to party, dance and sing in the streets has been gaining momentum during the overseas leg of the Eras tour.
And the fan-frenzy is only likely to grow after Swift’s love interest, Travis Kelce claimed her new album will “shake up the world when it finally drops” during a pre-Superbowl press conference on Tuesday.
But Victorian authorities are planning ahead and telling fans to not gather outside the three concerts at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in late February.
Melbourne Cricket Club chief executive Stuart Fox urged fans against gathering in Yarra Park citing safety issues, and confirmed there will be no official live site outside the stadium.
“Our focus is on the safe, secure and fun experience ticketholders will have when visiting the MCG, including the easy entry and exiting process in the precinct,’’ he said.
“There will be no activations in Yarra Park or screens showing the concert live.’’
Live sites at AAMI Park have been staged for Matildas and Socceroos World Cup matches but the concert would not be beamed live to fans outside the MCG.
While fans would not be turned away, Mr Fox said they were discouraged from attending the precinct during the concert and a strong police presence would be in force.
“We want to remind everyone of the use of the public space which includes no consumption of alcohol in Yarra Park and no marquees, tents, infrastructure installed or BBQs taking place,’’ he said.
“This is really important to ensure the crowd can enter and exit the MCG safely and we can operate the accessibility parking area within Yarra Park.”
Victoria Police said it would have a strong presence in and outside the stadium.
“Victoria Police has been working closely with key partners to extensively plan and prepare for the Taylor Swift Era’s Tour,’’ it said in a statement.
“As with any major event, projected crowds are constantly monitored and police resources are allocated accordingly.
“Police will have a visible presence both inside and outside the venue to ensure Swifties can enjoy the event safely.’’
While the message is unlikely to be popular to fans of the Cruel Summer star who don’t hold a ticket, Mr Fox said the record breaking sold out shows would be “another special moment in the MCG’s decorated history.’’
The warning came as Kelce, a champion footballer, revealed he had listened to “some” of Swift’s new record, and told fans it’ll be good.
“I have heard some of it, yes, and it’s unbelievable. I can’t wait for it to shake up the world when it drops,” he said.
“I can’t give you anything.
“I’ll leave that up to her,” he said.
