Australia’s population is expected to soar to 30 million people within the next 15 years, with Victoria leading the charge as the fastest growing state in the country.

The number of Victorians will go from 6.3 million today to up to 8 million by 2027, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Based on current trends, Australia’s population will grow from 24.6 million today to 30 million between 2029 and 2033.

The new projections come as Prime Minister Scott Morrison has flagged cutting Australia’s migration intake by up to 30,000 a year as the country’s major cities battle with congestion and frustrating delays.

New South Wales is projected to remain the largest state with a population of between approximately 9 and 9.3 million, but Victoria will continue growing at a faster rate.

Most of Victoria’s growth is expected to occur in Greater Melbourne, with the area to go from 4.8 million today to between 5.9 and 6.2 million in 2027.

As a share of Victoria’s population, Greater Melbourne will increase from 77 per cent today to 79 per cent in 2027, and reach up to 85 per cent in 2066.

Anthony Grubb, director of demography at the ABS, said looking further ahead Australia could add another 10 million by the year 2043.

“The projected time for the nation to grow by 5 million people on current indications will be similar, if not a little shorter, than the 14 years it took to grow from 20 million to 25 million,” Mr Grubb said.
