Premier Daniel Andrews is reportedly “up and about” but still facing challenges in his road to recovery, despite the government confident he’ll return to the top job in June.
Acting premier James Merlino on Thursday provided an update on Mr Andrews, who is continuing to recover from a serious spinal injury at home.
Mr Merlino said he was in regular contact with Andrews, with the pair expected to have a phone meeting on Thursday morning, ahead of another day in parliament.
“He’s doing well. He’s walking at a much greater level,” Mr Merlino explained.
“His doctors are happy with his progress. He’s up and about, so I’m really pleased with his progress.
“There’s still quite a way to go but he’s doing very well.”
Mr Merlino said the Premier’s proposed return to work date would still likely fall sometime in June.
“I think we’re on track for a June return … That’d be subject obviously to doctors’ advice in terms of when he can return to work,” he said.
Mr Andrews took to social media last month to reveal his team of specialists were confident he could return in June.
“My physio is also going well, but it’s clear I won’t be able to return to work before the State Budget in May,” he wrote.
“You only get one chance to properly recover from serious injuries and while it’s frustrating to be away from work, there is no alternative.
“We just have to wait until the ribs and spinal fracture have properly healed.”
