The Dartmoor truck driver charged over a horror crash that killed two women near Horsham has been bailed to appear in court next year.

Jason Anthony Hanson, 48, was charged with dangerous driving causing death and one count of dangerous driving causing serious injury.

A semi-trailer crashed into the rear of a car turning into a rest stop on the Western Highway in Laharum about 12.20pm on Tuesday.

The force of the crash pushed the vehicle into oncoming traffic, where it crashed head on into a passing vehicle.

A 71-year-old Horsham woman, who was the driver of the oncoming car, died at the scene.

A 42-year-old Ararat woman, who was the passenger in the turning car, also died.

The driver of the turning vehicle, a 36-year-old male from Black Range was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The truck driver was arrested at the scene south of Horsham about 300km from Melbourne.

He was bailed to appear at the Horsham Magistrates’ Court in January next year.
