Repairs to the damaged lines are currently underway.

They are not expected to be completed until at least 2pm.

Victoria Police is on site directing traffic.

The road closures are causing a major traffic headache for drivers.

Outbound drivers are advised to use Mount Alexander Road.

Yarra Trams say the Route 57 tram is being diverted in both directions via Mt Alexander Road and Ascot Vale Road due to the chaos.

A limited Route 57 tram replacement bus service is in operation from Stop 20 on Melrose St to stop 37 Maribyrnong Rd.

The replacement bus service will travel down Boundary Rd, Macaulay Rd, Stubbs St, Racecourse Rd, Epson Rd, and Union Rd.

Commuters can also take bus 404 (Footscray - Moonee Ponds) to connect with diverting tram Route 57 and 59 at Moonee Ponds Junction.
