AFL star Tom Mitchell has been left heartbroken after the loss of his beloved golden retriever Macy.
The four-year-old dog tragically died after a “freak accident” at a park in Melbourne over the weekend.
Mitchell revealed on social media that he held Macy in his arms, just moments before she passed away.
The Collingwood midfielder posted a heartbreaking photo of the dog covered by a blanket as he stroked her fluffy head.
Mitchell’s other golden retriever, Nala, watched on with sadness.
“The best memories over the last four years,” he said.
“Nala and I are heartbroken after a freak accident at the park.
“Grateful to hold her for her last 10 seconds before she passed away in my arms.”
Mitchell said his mates, Collingwood ruckman Darcy Cameron and defender Billy Frampton, tried to save Macy.
“The trauma of what happened will be there for a while,” he said.
“Nala is noticeably effected. She cries at night and keeps looking around the house for Macy during the day.”
Macy was a RSPCA ambassador and helped Mitchell during one of his darkest moments – when he broke his leg in 2019.
“We hope they have unlimited snacks and all of your favourite TV shows in dog heaven,” he said.
“The RSPCA have lost their favourite ambassador and we have lost our best friend.”
A RSPCA Victoria spokesman said Macy “couldn’t have been matched with a better human and doggo sibling”.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the unexpected passing of Macy, ambassador extraordinaire and friend to us all here at RSPCA Victoria,” he said.
“Her gorgeous smile and cheeky personality will be sorely missed.
“We send our condolences to Tom Mitchell, Nala and the whole family during this time.”
The Brownlow Medallist was traded from Hawthorn to Collingwood at the end of the 2022 season.
Mitchell declined to comment further about the incident.
