Two men have been arrested after they allegedly fled on foot from a hit and run on a Melbourne freeway that left a severely injured teenage boy in the back seat of the car.

Victoria Police were called to a two-car crash on the Western Ring Rd between Ballarat Road and Furlong Road at about 11.30pm on Thursday.

Police say three people were in a Honda Sedan when it veered across the road, colliding into a Great Wall SUV.

The driver and the front passenger of the Honda fled on foot as their teenage passenger lay severely injured in the back seat.

Police have since arrested a 20-year-old Glenroy man and a 20-year-old Sunshine West man, who have been hospital under police guard.

The passengers of the other car did not sustain any serious injuries.

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
