The victim of a terrifying home invasion who was struck by his own car as thieves made off with it has spoken out about how “he thought he was going to die”.
The 36-year-old Tarneit man, who didn’t want to reveal his identity out of fear for himself and his family, said they now live in terror and are thinking of leaving Australia.
Police allege a group of three offenders broke into the Cobalt St home and stole keys to two vehicles while the owners were sleeping about 3.20am Thursday.
They then allegedly returned to steal a red Audi coupe and a grey Mazda sedan about 7am, which the owner and his wife were alerted to when they heard the cars starting leading to the terrifying confrontation.
“At quarter to eight when we were looking for the car keys my wife heard one of the cars starting and she rushed outside,” he said.
“So I rushed out to and from what I could see the Mazda was already gone, and there was a tall skinny male of African appearance sitting in the Audi, driving while my wife was trying to get him out of the car.
“She was able to open the door, and he pushed her away, closed the door and in that time I was able to get out in front of the car.
“I could see him put the car into gear and he started driving towards me.”
Security camera footage captures the majority of the incident, the victim describing what happened and what went through his mind at the time, as his three and a half year old son watched on.
“He came at speed towards me and I didn’t have any option but to jump and try to put a step on the bonnet and I rolled over the bonnet and he drove off,” he said.
“I was thinking that I’m going to die today. This is how I’m dying, in front of my child and my wife out the front of my own house, killed by my own car.”
The Audi has since been recovered, found at Manor Lakes at 3pm on Thursday and a 16-year-old boy, who was out on bail, has been charged.
The Mazda and the two other alleged offenders are yet to be located.
The man said he was now re-evaluating what is best for him and his family.
“We came from overseas to find a better life in Australia,” he said.
“I am thinking of returning to India, because I honestly believe it is safer there now than here.”
The 16-year-old has been charged with home invasion, theft of motor vehicle, conduct endangering life, commit indictable offences while on bail and unlicensed driving.
He was remanded to appear before a children’s court at a later date.
