The Source: Sydney swoops on Melbourne’s ‘major events capital’ crown
If the Commonwealth Games debacle wasn’t bad enough, the marketing whizzes of Melbourne are now letting Sydney trample over our hard-fought global reputation.

Melbourne has lost its lustre as a global sporting jewel of late, thanks in no small part to the surrender of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which Victorian taxpayers will pay Glasgow to host.
Now, The Source has been equally affronted by the city’s online marketing spiel for the Men’s Rugby World Cup, which comes down under in 2027.
Sydney is promoting itself on the event website as “Australia’s gateway and its only truly global, multicultural city”. Um, hang on a minute.
Sydney also declares itself “the major events capital of the Asia Pacific’’. Say what?!
Let’s see what promotional geniuses of Melbourne have to say.
“Every Bit Different” is the top line promoting the city. More like a slogan designed by a committee of marketing types.
Then follows this underwhelming treatise: “This is the bit where we get to the heart of what makes Melbourne, Melbourne. We’re a diverse city that knows how to live.’’
So much for the hard sell.
The Melbourne promo also features a view of the city skyline from The Shrine of Remembrance. Nice vista sure, but how about the mighty ’G – it is a sporting event after all, not a memorial service.
But hey, the way the state is going …
