Putting the squeeze on Victoria’s movers, shakers and headline makers.

One of Melbourne’s great late-night institutions is up for sale.

The famous Embassy Taxi Cafe in West Melbourne has been part of the city’s landscape since 1962.

The Spencer St eatery is a popular venue for weary cabbies looking for a feed or coffee to get through long shifts ferrying Melburnians around town.

It’s also a favourite stop-over for folk who are ending a massive night and in need of a quality burger and/or deep fried sustenance.

As one everyday reviewer once put it: “The burgers are always good. The dim sims are to die for. Hot chocolate is great. This place has it right and has not changed since the 70s.”

The Embassy was also once known to host the odd business meeting involving members of the criminal fraternity.

In 2000, a newspaper reviewer offered this advice to cafe customers: “It’ll help you fit in if you smoke Peter Jacksons in 50s, have a mobile and wear a tailored leather jacket or cabbie’s epaulets.”

New deadline for comedian’s reno rescue

Carlton tragic Andy Lee has asked the architect in charge of the mega-makeover of his derelict Hawthorn mansion which will happen first — the finish of the house job, or a Blues flag?

To which the architect replied: “Jeepers, we might have to get our skates on.”

Lee says there have been no objections from direct neighbours to the super duper renos at the property he bought with partner Rebecca Harding for a twitch over $8m in 2021.

The pair are armed with approved plans (including a tunnel) for what is currently a shell. They may even hold a street party before the big build begins.

“It’s got no ceiling, no running water, no electricity, grass growing through the walls and our direct neighbours have been wonderful,’’ Lee says.

“We won’t be in there any time soon. We might have a street party but if the ceiling collapses we have to sign a release form.”
