The Source: Cyber criminals get creative in Arts Centre hack

The boss of Melbourne’s Arts Centre says she’s “deeply sorry” after a recent data breach revealed hackers are getting cyber attacks down to a fine art.

Cyber criminals have hacked into the Arts Centre Melbourne’s IT network.

Arts Centre Melbourne chief executive Karen Quinlan said the data breach might impact a “limited number of customers” as well as employees and contractors.

“We are deeply sorry this breach has occurred,” Ms Quinlan said in a statement.

The data breach occurred on November 29.

Ms Quinlan added: “We are working with the Department of Government Services Cyber Incident Response Service to determine the extent of the incident, and monitor the impact, so we can best ensure the privacy of our team and customers.

“From our forensic investigations, we understand that employee information, and a limited amount of customer and contractor data, may have been accessed as part of this incident. Arts Centre Melbourne will directly notify impacted individuals if their data has been breached.

“There are no ongoing impacts to Arts Centre Melbourne’s services or operations, and additional protections have been put in place to provide additional security to our IT network.

“Arts Centre Melbourne is continuing to work closely with the Cyber Incident Response Service, Victoria Police and the relevant State and Commonwealth Government agencies to determine the cause and the scale of the impact.”

Arts Centre Melbourne employees were notified by email on Wednesday of a “privacy breach resulting from an illegal cyber-attack.”

The email added: “Working with the Cyber Response team, we have identified that information accessed and stolen includes employee details.”

It said employee information typically stored by the Arts Centre included name, address, bank account details, date of birth, and tax file number.
