Putting the squeeze on Victoria’s movers, shakers and headline makers
It’s 182 days since former premier Dan Andrews left office, and we still don’t know what his next gig will be.
Would he join the Monash University Council? Would he move to New York, which he apparently adores? Would he just play golf, given his $300,000-odd a year annual pension for life?
And what of the two companies, Glencairn St and Wedgetail Partners, registered with Andrews as sole director?
Understandably, the Where’s Dan vocational rumours haven’t slowed.
The latest, from ALP circles, goes that Andrews has been finalising board position offers.
He is expected to take at least one and up to three board positions, depending on the perceived conflicts of interest that the particular positions might inspire.
Or so the stories go.
Boards are fertile hunting grounds for ex-ALP ministers.
Martin Pakula is chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.
James Merlino is chairman of the Suburban Rail Loop Authority.
Former ministers Martin Foley and Lisa Neville are now chairpeople in health care.
News on the post-politics Andrews has been suggested possible before the state budget on
May 7, with pundits suggesting that the distractions of Easter (family and footy) or budget week itself (crippling state debt and service cuts) might be opportune times to drop such announcements.
Sally Capp gets roasted
Celia Pacquola had the zinger of the day when she introduced Melbourne’s Lord Mayor Sally Capp at the 2024 Melbourne International Comedy Festival official launch event on Tuesday.
“I assume she can park anywhere she likes in this city,” Pacquola joked as Cr Capp walked to the podium.
Was that punchline a reference to the Lord Mayor’s limousine travel?
Cr Capp spent $31,636 on limousine travel in the 2022-23 financial year, including 53 limousine trips in March alone, as it also emerged her chauffer-driven hire car was allowed to park illegally outside Town Hall.
Unfazed by Pacquola’s jibe, Cr Capp opened her speech with: “Why did the Lord Mayor cross the road?”
Sadly, the pay-off wasn’t about a waiting limo parked on the other side.
Nope; she crossed the road to go to the comedy festival.
LOL (low on laughs).
