The Source: Members tee off at Daniel Andrews’ special treatment at Cape Schanck

Daniel Andrews got on the golf on his first weekend after resigning as premier but a start time well ahead of strict club rules has upset powerful Mornington Peninsula putters.

Putting the squeeze on Victoria’s movers, shakers and headline makers.

Daniel Andrews has left golf members of a swanky Mornington Peninsula course feeling teed off after the former premier and two of his influential friends appeared to get special treatment.

Mr Andrews enjoyed his first weekend post-politics playing a round with developer Max Beck and activewear mogul Clyde Davenport, who are members at the National Golf Course at Cape Schanck.

The group, which included Mr Andrews as a guest of Mr Beck, teed off at 10.42am.

However, the start time was an hour and 18 minutes before non-members are allowed to hit the green at noon, according to the club’s rules.

One irate member said: “Guests can’t play before 12pm, even though there is a guest members’ course, because there’s so many members and we pay a fortune and we have to have the rights to play.”

The member said they did not want Mr Andrews at the club at all.

“He’s a member at Kingston Heath but they said he hasn’t shown his face around there for a while. Maybe he wants a change, but doesn’t realise people don’t like him.”

Mr Andrews declined to comment.

In 2019, several MPs named Mr Beck as among a small circle of Melbourne businessmen who had the ear of Mr Andrews while he was premier.

Mr Beck owns Essendon Airport in partnership with Lindsay Fox, founder of the Linfox trucking empire.

Mr Beck, chairman of Beck Corporation, told the Herald Sun he was shocked to hear his fellow members had complained about his game with the former premier, saying he was not aware he had done anything wrong.

“I’m disappointed to hear that this matter has been aired in the press rather than privately,” he said. “I was under the impression that it was OK as it was a quiet day.”

Mr Beck said the club had not brought the matter to his attention.

The National Golf Club was contacted but refused to comment.

The Cape Schanck course is on the southernmost tip of the Mornington Peninsula and is ranked among the top 100 courses in the world, boasting ocean views from several holes.

The course also has strict rules including not playing in thongs or high-vis, and trackpants are banned.

One time Premier contender Tim Holding climbs a different ladder

When then Premier Steve Bracks elevated two young guns to his state cabinet — Jacinta Allan and Tim Holding — he predicted that one of them would become premier.

He did not foresee the other would climb a more conventional kind of ladder and restore a French castle.

As Allan navigates her days in the post-Dan haze, Holding has been generating a different kind of attention.

He lives with partner Felicity Selkirk (and dog Mademoiselle Truffle) at Chateau de Purnon, south of the Loire Valley.

Not long ago, they met French president Emannuelle Macron, whom they thanked for his support and encouragement.

There are endless social media feeds about the restoration, an upcoming book, and lots of photos depicting backbreaking jobs of a kind which most Spring St politicians would actively avoid.
