Teens let off fire extinguishers, smoke bombs at Hoyts Eastland during Minecraft movie
Teens watching the Minecraft movie at Hoyts Eastland have set off a fire extinguisher and hurled drinks at the screen as part of a viral trend triggered by a scene in the movie.

A Ringwood cinema has been thrown into chaos as teens let off fire extinguishers and threw objects at the screen as part of a viral trend surrounding a certain scene in the recently released Minecraft movie.
What started as a messy, but mostly harmless, trend of moviegoers throwing popcorn has escalated over the last few days with a brawl witnessed and now a fire extinguisher being let off.
The craze involves moviegoers launching popcorn and drinks when Jack Black’s character introduces the “chicken jockey”.
A mother who was in the screening at Eastland Cinema told 3AW the audience got “completely doused” in the dry chemicals from the extinguisher.
“It scared a lot of children, and a lot of grandparents,” she said.
“You couldn’t breathe, you couldn’t swallow, the kids were choking, my kids were crying, their eyes were burning.”
Footage from the incident shows the powder fill the air along the front rows of the cinema as people get up and flee screaming.
The angry mother said staff members were “checking bags” of those coming into the movie, with things like flour and toilet paper being confiscated but that was about the extent of efforts to stop anything happening.
She was also not impressed with the way things were handled following the incident
“(Afterwards) not one person was asked if they were OK, not one person,” she said.
“The manager told people to go to cinema 8 where they would restart the movie from where it had stopped.
“But hang on a second … you have got kids crying and you have grandparents coughing and choking and not one person was asked if they were OK medically?”
Director of the movie Jared Hess is a fan of the chaos, recently telling the New York Times he found it hilarious.
“I’m just laughing my brains out every time someone sends me a new video,” he said.
The audience at a Wednesday afternoon screening of the Minecraft Movie at Hoyts Chadstone, a staff member implored the audience not to use any “dangerous items.”
“We ask that you don’t throw any drinks or popcorn during the movie, it creates a real mess that is a pain to clean up after,” the staff member said.
According to the address actual chickens have been thrown in some screenings, when a character in the film uses the phrase “chicken jockey.”
Footage has also emerged online of fireworks and fire extinguishers being released at some screenings.
