ONE of Victoria’s most notable police stations will be knocked down and rebuilt if the state opposition wins November’s election.

Prahran police station is important to current and former members of Victoria Police not just because of the infrastructure it provides, but because it was the station where constables Steven Tynan and Damian Eyre were based when they were murdered in Walsh St, South Yarra, 30 years ago this October.

Edward O’Donohue, the opposition’s police spokesman, said $22 million would be allocated for the project.

“A Liberal Nationals Government will rebuild the Prahran station to give police a new, contemporary, state of the art station and the resources they need so they can focus on keeping local people safe,” Mr O’Donohue said.

“Daniel Andrews promised better resources for police but hasn’t delivered.

“The memorial at Prahran police station holds a special place in the hearts of many which is why we will work with Victoria Police, The Police Association, the Blue Ribbon Foundation and the families to ensure that those who have given their lives protecting the community, are honoured and remembered.”

The Police Association of Victoria welcomed the plans, with secretary Wayne Gatt saying it was much needed.

“It will give our members a modern, purpose-built facility to cope with the demands they face in working in such a dynamic and highly populated area,” Mr Gatt said.

“The Police Association identified Prahran as a key station in need of redevelopment in our key election priorities document released last year and we are pleased that our concerns have resulted in action.”
