Paramedics were called about 8.20pm and the alleged victim was taken in a stable condition to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with injuries to his abdominal region.

His injuries were described as non-life threatening.

Stanley St resident Antonina Maino said she heard a gunshot from her house.

Ms Maino said she was frightened after the incident but not surprised.

“I know what is going around everywhere in the area,” Ms Maino said.

“I just know from the people in the double story unit apartment that it is very noisy every weekend, very noisy and plenty of cars parking all through the street.

“Yeah I am scared. I went to bed already and can’t sleep.”

Neighbours said a man, woman, a young boy and a dog had been living at the house for about six months.

Sophie Newell lives directly behind the property and said there were moving trucks in the driveway in recent days.

“It looked like they were moving out so we assumed it (the gun shot) was noise from that,” she said.

Ms Newell said she was shocked to find out it was a shooting.

“It’s a little bit scary that it happened so close to home.”

Gurcharan Singh lives in the rear townhouse and said the noise of the gunshot was “like someone hitting the road”.

Another neighbour, who was home with her children at the time, said she heard one loud bang.

“We shat ourselves,” she said.

“At first we didn’t believe it was a gunshot until we came out and saw the ambulance and the police. There were probably 10 police.”

She said the man who was shot largely kept to himself.

“I wouldn’t say he was dodgy but I’m not surprised.”

Valerie Sendecky said Stanley St had always been a nice quiet street but the incident had prompted safety fears.

“I’m upset about it,” she said.

“I’ve been speaking to neighbours who’ve just moved in and they’re now thinking this is not too good an area to live.”

Joyce Croswell, who has lived in Stanley St for 55 years, said she was shocked and scared by the incident.

She said it was the first time a shooting had occurred in the street.

“Nothing like this has happened before, I mean nothing,” Ms Croswell said.

“I tell you what, I’ve got all the deadlocks on, I’m not going out.

“I looked through the windows and my house was lit up like a Christmas tree with the lights from the police car.”

The Yarraville man is expected to face court today.
