Labor hopeful posed naked with shredded copies of Monash University student magazine

An aspiring Labor candidate has come under fire after posting nude portraits with his genitalia covered by shredded copies of a Monash University student magazine, including its “feminist edition”.

Andrews rejects doing a deal with the Greens due to 'toxic culture'

An aspiring Labor candidate posted naked images with his genitalia covered by a feminist magazine last year.

Labor’s upper house candidate for Northern Victoria, Jan Morgiewicz, caused an angry stir when he posed naked with shredded copies of Monash University student magazine Lot’s Wife, including its ‘feminist edition’.

Lot’s Wife’s then-editor Sophia McNamara said ripping up copies of a “publication that advocated and provided a voice for women felt like a huge slap in the face for women at Monash.”

“I immediately thought to myself that it wasn’t just any student money going down the drain, it was money directly aimed at women,” she said.

Mr Morgiewicz has said his actions were in response to the magazine being used as a “political tool”.

He has the fourth spot on Labor’s ticket for the Northern Victoria Upper House region, in 2014 Labor had two successful candidates in that region.

It comes as Labor has upped its attack on the Greens for what it says has a “toxic culture” towards women after two men in the party made public misogynistic and degrading comments about women.

Greens Northcote MP Lidia Thorpe has accepted the resignation of her electorate office Paul McMillan over his offensive Twitter page.

Deputy Premier James Merlino on Monday hit out at the Greens, saying “they squibbed it” in dealing with their Footscray candidate Angus McAlpine who was caught out rapping about date rape.

“They’re standing by and allowing this toxic culture within the Greens political party,” Mr Merlino said.

A Labor spokeswoman said: “This is a desperate distraction by the Greens, who are refusing to disendorse their Footscray candidate whose lyrics are sexist, misogynist, and homophobic.”
