2022 Victorian state election: Former federal MP Gladys Liu runs for upper house seat in November

Former Liberal MP Gladys Liu may have lost her seat in the federal election, but is planning a political comeback — albeit at a lower level.

Ousted Federal MP Gladys Liu will run for a spot in Victoria’s upper house at the November election.

The former Liberal Chisholm MP confirmed to the Herald Sun on Monday afternoon that she had officially nominated for the seat of northeast metro region.

Ms Liu said she wasn’t ready to call time on her political career, adding that she has more to offer in public life.

But she declined to publicly comment further, stating that party rules prevented her from speaking to the media.

Ms Liu, who held the seat of Chisholm by 0.5 per cent prior to the poll, was defeated by Labor challenger Carina Garland in last month’s election.

Chisholm incorporates the suburbs of Glen Waverley, Box Hill, Mt Waverley, Burwood East and Blackburn.

In a statement following her election loss, Ms Liu said representing her community had been “the greatest honour and privilege of my life”.

“I have always felt that our community is a special place. In large part, this is because of the incredible people that choose to make it their home,” she said.

“When I came to this country to study more than 35 years ago, I never thought that I would be given this chance. I hope that my example might encourage more migrants to take a chance and stand for public office.

“I am proud of what we achieved as a government over the past three years, and I am hopeful for our future.”

The Victorian Liberals said nominations were a matter for the party.

The Herald Sun has sought comment from Liberal Party headquarters.
