Police including members of Operation Trinity — a dedicated task force targeting young car thieves across the city — were called to a house on Finlayson St in Rosanna about 4am Sunday.

Police alleged the six offenders entered a home and stole the keys to a silver Mercedes sedan.

Police found the stolen Toyota abandoned on Robinson Rd in Hawthorn and located the Mercedes about 8pm with the assistance of the police helicopter.

Police allege the driver of the Mercedes fled and sped down the wrong side of several streets, including Warragul Rd in Mt Waverley where it hit speeds as high as 140 km/h.

The Mercedes was dumped on Illawarra Rd in Hawthorn.

A short foot chase followed and police, using police dogs, arrested six youths at a property on Kooyongkoot Rd.

Airwing footage of the arrest shows at least five people leaving the vehicle before at least two people are cornered in what appears to be a backyard of a property as police approach.

The pair can be seen with their hands in the air at a dead end, as more police move through a neighbouring property in pursuit of the group.

It then cuts to the pair being swarmed by officers as they are placed in handcuffs.

Two 16-year-old boys, a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, all from the Latrobe Valley area, along with a 15-year-old boy from the Port Phillip area and an 18-year-old Healesville were arrested.

Operation Trinity runs from dusk until dawn across Melbourne.
