There’s a sign-flashing good Samaritan dishing out helpful alerts to fellow motorists as he whizzes around Melbourne — and we’d love to find him.

Sandra from Burnside was driving on Ballarat Rd in Deer Park a few weeks ago when a car pulled up beside her at the lights at Station Rd and tooted to grab her attention.

“I looked over to see the driver, who was a man in his late 50s or early 60s,” she says.

“He was fiddling with what seemed like a collection of items on his passenger seat.”

Sandra was stunned when the man held up a printed sign to his window.

It read, in large print: “Your tail light’s not working.”

“It almost looked like it had been painted, and it was in cursive writing,” she says.

“It looked like he’d bought it or made it.”

Sandra gave him a thumbs-up to thank him for the tip, and the chap returned the sign to his passenger seat, but it left her wondering.

“I began to ponder what was printed on the other signs he was fiddling with,” she says.

“Would he have multiple signs for car faults such as, ‘Your tyres need realigning’ or ‘Your indicators aren’t working’?

“Would he have signs that compliment good driving?

“I will always be left to wonder as the traffic lights changed to green and he drove off — but I would love to know.”

John from Lalor believes it must have been the same man who flashed a sign at him only 1km or so away in Deer Park a couple of months ago.

“I was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Western Highway and Westwood Drive in Deer Park when I finally looked around after hearing a car horn tooting for the third time,” John says.

“It was the car behind me. The driver or passenger was holding up a quite large sign against the inside of their windscreen saying, “Your stop lights are out.”

Both Sandra and John say the signs are well-made and not hastily scribbled.
