IT’S the most unlikely of inter-species relationships.
Babe the pet sheep has a lifelong “special friend”.
But the object of Babe’s amorous affection is not the family dog, or even a cat — it’s the ride-on mower.
Yvonne Fix adopted Babe in 2011 when the lamb was abandoned because of a slight leg defect.
“Babe rode on my lap on our motor mower when small and associates the mower with ‘mother’,” explains Yvonne, from Musk in central Victoria.
Babe still has flashbacks on occasion, and last week she came bolting when Yvonne was passing by on the mower en route to the orchard.
“She ran from the other side of the paddock at a fast trot, screeching to a halt at the petrol cap to nibble and kiss it,” Yvonne says.
“The sound of the engine and the smell of petrol turned her on. She continuously rubbed her head and her ears on the rear bumper near the petrol cap. She was almost purring.
“This went on for about five minutes before suddenly Babe woke from her trance and realised the mower was a mower!”
