Spirit of Tasmania submarines across Bass Strait, ‘teacup’ wombats, a multidisciplined Victoria Police “specialist wheeled patrol”, Heinz moving into the booming interiors market and knitted beanies to protect growing acorns against the cold are among the standout April Fool’s jokes popping up on social media.
Victoria Police’s post spruiking its new “specialist wheeled police” squad to help combat street crime and anti-social behaviour in Melbourne’s CBD and the inner suburbs may just take the cake, with a video to match.
“The ‘Roller Squad’, comprised of a range of specialist wheeled police, will patrol Melbourne’s car-free zones, malls and bicycle paths,” Victoria Police said, quoting Inspector Tony Sparrow from Northeast Operations Command.
“The squad will provide rolling coverage of some of the city’s most popular shopping precincts, parks, and tourist spots.
“With the ever-expanding bicycle network, having quickly deployable police on skates, blades and scooters, provides a welcome boost and greater flexibility than our current bicycle squad.
“We want offenders to know that the Roller Squad will catch them wherever they are, unless of course they’re on slightly thick grass or roads with small stones on them.
“Roller Squad members will be subject to a rigorous training regime prior to strapping on the skates and will need to demonstrate proficiency in multiple disciplines including roller skating, roller blading, scooting, skateboarding and unicycling.”
The Spirit of Tasmania’s submarines across Bass Strait gag also takes some beating.
“Prepare to experience Bass Strait as no spirited traveller has before,” it posted on Facebook.
“Introducing the Spirit VI submarine, our first underwater ferry.”
Heinz claimed to have moved “into affordable homewares, with a debut, limited-edition Heinz Beanz Bag” and the City of Melbourne to be introducing a new sculpture and iconic “big thing”, in the form of a giant coffee.
“We couldn’t go for second best, we had to espresso ourselves,” the council posted.
“From the Big Pineapple to the Big Banana, Melbourne was feeling a little left out when it came to Australia’s iconic ‘big things’. So, we’ve been brewing up something special.
Introducing... the Big Flat White. Coming soon.”
For adventure lovers, the Melbourne Aquarium claimed to now be offering dives with jellyfish.
And the CSIRO celebrated the discovery of a new species of ‘teacup’ wombat, found in a Tasmanian national park.
