Grant Thomas has apologised for his involvement in a video where controversial footy identity Sam Newman appeared in drag and declared he is “transitioning” into a woman
Newman was star blasted on social media for the “disrespectful” video in which he appeared dressed in drag.
Thomas initially tweeted his defence of Newman.
“Sam is merely trying to highlight one component. Those men that transition to women for personal gain in sporting events,” wrote Thomas on Twitter.
“He thinks it’s getting out of control and if something isn’t done, it has the potential to be a massive problem in schools, sport etc.”
Thomas has since apologised to those who were offended by the video.

“I apologise unreservedly to everyone, especially those offended,” Thomas wrote on Twitter.
“As a first step I’ve requested Sam remove the video to avoid any further impact on the community. To be clear, this does not have anything to do with Up. I unconditionally support people of all diversities.”
The video posted to Sam Newman’s Twitter account yesterday includes journalist Mike Sheahan and the former St Kilda coach.
It has since been removed from social media.
Newman can be seen speaking to camera with smeared make-up, a white hat, and a scarf.
“I think I’ve run my race as an older male, and I’m thinking of transitioning …” said Newman.
“I think I could feel comforted by being an older female, and it’ll work well because my partner is thinking of turning herself into a boy … It doesn’t change we’re still man and woman.
“I’m going to clean up on world titles as a woman, an older woman … And I’m serious … If anyone thinks I’m not, I’ll sue.”

The former Footy Show host has been slammed online for the video.
Angie Greene — LGBT advocate and daughter of former Hawthorn champion Russell Greene — described Newman as “a bully”.
“I thought after our conversation last year that you may have left with an ounce of respect towards the trans community and human beings in general,” wrote Greene on Twitter.
Follow through and sue me then @Origsmartassam because I think youâre an embarrassment and a fool. For someone who says he learned something after how he spoke about Caitlyn Jenner on TV, there are no words. Just accept it and donât try and talk your way out of it this time https://t.co/KNSicSMk17

Transgender footy player, Hannah Mouncey also critised the video, saying Newman was an “embarrassment and a fool”.
“For someone who says he learned something after how he spoke about Caitlyn Jenner on TV, there are no words. Just accept it and don’t try and talk your way out of it this time,” she wrote.
AFLW player Darcy Vescio also slammed the video on Instagram, labelling it as “disgusting” and “damaging”.
“Zero care for other people’s lives. Yuck,” she wrote.
