The ex-wife of drug lord Carl said she never trusted Lawyer X because the ­defence barrister avoided eye contact with her and did not acknowledge her when “the boys” were around.

“We knew who we could and couldn’t trust,” Williams says, referring to discussions with hitman Andrew “Benji” Veniamin, who threatened ­Lawyer X just before his death in 2004. “We hated her guts.”

Williams has told the Herald Sun she got advice from Lawyer X on legal matters, and now wonders if she informed on her.

At the peak of ­Melbourne’s underworld war, Williams says Lawyer X enjoyed partying with gangland figures at events where cocaine was widely snorted.

“She was all for the boys,” Williams says. “I didn’t know she was a police informer, but I knew there was something there. She was a party -----.”

Lawyer X hosted the gala christening of Dhakota Williams at Crown casino in 2003.

In her MC role, Lawyer X got laughs by peppering references to Victoria Police.

Williams says Lawyer X told the crowd that she “would like to thank Victoria Police, ­especially Purana taskforce, for allowing this day to happen and letting Carl be here”.

At about the same time, Lawyer X had begun to unofficially inform to Purana detectives on her clients, who then included Carl Williams.

He blamed Lawyer X for his associates rolling on him, branding her “a dog”. Their ­actions resulted in his ­conviction for four murders.

After he tired of her prison visits and probing questions, he warned associate Tony Mokbel not to trust her. Mokbel was represented by Lawyer X before and after he fled the country in 2006.

Lawyer X warned Carl Williams he was about to be charged with murder and advised him to flee overseas, the gangland widow says.

Carl Williams told his then-wife after a meeting with Lawyer X in 2004 that she “said that I should f--- off overseas”.

Carl Williams continued: “I’m going to get pinched. What should I stay here for?”

But his ex says she was unaware of the extent of his criminality at the time, and talked him out of absconding.

She still blames herself, she says.

Carl Williams himself later agreed to help police in exchange for an array of sweeteners.

But he was beaten to death inside Barwon prison by jailhouse thug Matthew Charles Johnson in 2010.
