A FATHER of two has died after becoming stuck down a 10-metre hole at a construction site in Wallan, despite emergency crews’ best efforts to save him.
Victoria Police Leading Senior Constable Paul Turner said it was believed the worker, who is yet to be formally identified, fell into the trench in Springridge housing estate when it collapsed about 2.50pm.
CFA and MFB firefighters and SES volunteers were called out to help rescue the man, who is 35 years old and has two children, according to the CFMEU.
Victorian secretary of the CFMEU construction division, John Setka, sent condolences to the man’s family, friends and colleagues.
“No job is worth a life. Every family deserves to be together at the end of the day,” he said in a statement.
“The construction industry is dangerous, but it doesn’t have to be deadly. Safety must be the priority and lives must come first.”
The trench, measuring about 2m wide, was being dug on Springridge Blvd.
Wallan is a suburb under development 45km from the city.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
