The Premier is due back in 10 days after a spinal injury — but questions remain over whether his leave will be extended.

Questions remain over whether Premier Daniel Andrews will return to his role as quickly as planned, with 10 days remaining before he is due back.

The state government in March announced Mr Andrews would take leave for six weeks while he recovered from a serious spinal injury.

But with this deadline fast approaching and revelations on Easter Sunday he was walking for up to 18 minutes a day, it is possible this leave could be extended.

Acting Premier James Merlino on Thursday said Mr Andrews would make a decision after further advice from his doctors over the next week.

“The doctors are pleased with his progress but the most important thing is that Dan recovers,” he said.

“That (18 minutes of walking) shows just how severe an injury it was. He is very, very lucky.

“He’ll come back when his doctors say he is able to come back.”

Mr Merlino said recovering from a spinal injury was a “painful, slow recovery”.

“Over the next few weeks he’ll be discussing with his doctors what does a return to work look like and when,” he said.

“We’re in contact for the big issues but for the most part both myself, his office and our colleagues, we’re leaving him alone to focus on his recovery.”
