Melbourne philanthropist Lady Primrose Potter was lucky to escape serious injury after being involved in a car accident that required her to be dramatically rescued from the Yarra River on Sunday evening.
The 92-year-old’s Mercedes went flying down a steep embankment into the river after clipping a Holden Commodore about 7pm.
The driver of the Commodore stopped and helped Lady Potter, alerting neighbours to call emergency services.
While Lady Potter was able to get the door of the car open herself, she required some assistance getting up the slippery embankment.
According to a police spokeswoman, the officers who attended the scene were “shocked when they found the elderly driver was able to make her way up the incline.”
“Police have praised the Melbourne woman, and a passer-by who assisted, as she was able to open the door, make her way out of the knee-deep water and climb up the embankment,” she said.
It is understood the widow of Sir Ian Potter insisted that she was fine immediately following the incident, but was taken to the Alfred hospital for observation for what was believed to be minor upper and lower body injuries.
Lady Potter is now expected to undergo a licence review.
