A mysterious death has rocked the community at Lyndale Secondary College in Dandenong North, where a staff member found a body within the school grounds.

The body of the man, aged in his 20s, was discovered at the school by a staff member about 7am on Monday.

Police do not believe the man was the victim of foul play.

Homicide squad detectives were called in after the circumstances were initially assessed as being suspicious.

The man had been badly injured but a post mortem examination has led them to believe there was nothing suspicious about the fatality.

The grim discovery prompted a large police response, with dozens of forensic officers and detectives spotted searching outside the school’s gymnasium.

Classes continued in other parts of the school while police probed how the man’s body ended up at the education facility.

Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said the staff member who found the man’s body assisted police with their inquiries.

“Our investigators are speaking to him and of course he would be in shock,” he said.

“He will be provided with appropriate support and counselling to help him as he moves forward.”

Mr Thomas couldn’t confirm whether the man died on the school grounds or whether his body was moved from another location.

“It’s too early to say, we’re going to try and piece together the male’s movements and determine where this has occurred,” he said.

“Whether it’s happened there or whether he has been brought to the scene … we don’t know yet, it’s too early to say.”

Police have cordoned off part of the school however classes remain ongoing.

Mr Thomas said classes were continuing at the school as police looked for weapons.

“We’ve engaged with the department of education and the principal of the school,” he said.

“The principal has put things in place to ensure the students obviously don’t go near the scene and the principal is very happy with that.”

The Department of Education confirmed this, commenting support is being offered to all students and staff affected by the incident.

Mr Thomas urged the public to come forward if they saw suspicious activity in the area between 7.30pm on Friday and 7am on Monday.

The incident comes a day before the school’s year 12 students are expected to undergo their English or English Language exam.
