The state’s biggest supermax prison will begin construction in December.
A first look at the new maximum security facility for the state’s worst crooks has been released.
It will include almost 1300 new beds to meet the growing demand.
The Chisholm Road Prison Project is to be built on the existing site of Barwon Prison at Lara, near Geelong, expanding on the infamous jail and nearby Marngoneet Correctional Centre.
The build is part of a $1.8 billion investment in Victoria’s prison system to be allocated in the 2019/20 budget.
More than 900 jobs are expected to be created during construction with a further 650 new and ongoing opportunities to be created at the facility.
Spots will also be allocated to boost opportunities for apprentices, trainees and engineering cadets to work on the project.
Minister for Corrections Ben Carroll said the new and improved prison is part of a wider plan for a safer state.
“This is an important milestone as part of our plan to build a stronger, more secure prison system that is equipped to meet demand now and into the future,” he said.
“We are delivering the prison infrastructure that a growing Victoria needs, and investing in programs to break the cycle of reoffending and keep people out of prison.”
