A new 16-storey boutique hotel — spruiked as “Melbourne’s urban oasis’’ — will feature a restaurant, a first level balcony as well as a rooftop bar with breathtaking views of Melbourne’s skyline.

A new 16 storey boutique hotel with a rooftop bar and restaurant will be built in Melbourne’s CBD after winning city council approval.

A five storey building now occupied by the Melbourne Theosophical Society and two double storey buildings will be demolished to make way for the $25 million development in Russell St.

The City of Melbourne has green lit revised plans for the project which will see a 57.2m boutique hotel built between Bourke and Collins Streets.

The new building — spruiked as “Melbourne’s urban oasis’’ by developers — will feature a top level terrace, restaurant and bar and a first level balcony over Russell St.

It will also boast 191 hotel rooms, restaurants and retail spaces.

The building occupied by the Melbourne Theosophical Society since 1972, built in 1923, and nearby properties at 132 and 134 Russell St will be given the wrecking ball to make way for the development.

In its successful pitch for a planning permit, developer Triple MMM Holdings said the building would become popular for Melbourne residents as well as tourists.

“It is designed to become a part of Melbourne’s vibrant hospitality scene,’’ it said.

It said the hotel’s lobby, restaurants, rooftop deck, cafe, function space and Russell St balcony would be open to the public “with a view to becoming a true Melbourne place’’.

The hotel, about 400m from Bourke St, will be built without any carparking capacity.

And it will be built to five star green or “national excellence” rating, including operable shutters to all guest rooms to reduce energy usage.

The developers said it “will be a combination of spaces that enable occupants and visitors to stay, eat, drink, relax, and play – a destination for not only travellers but locals alike.’’

The building is expected to be completed by 2023 and the permit will expire if it is not started within three years of its recent issue.
