Melbourne will serve up a feast of food as well as a major events masterclass as full crowds return for January’s Australian Open.

Victoria’s Grand Slam will tap into Melbourne’s proud food and drink culture with new dining precincts and some of the city’s best restaurants for fans flocking to see the world’s best tennis players.

And some of Melbourne’s best chefs will join forces to put the city’s culinary class on show to the world, with fans dished up everything from street food to high end dining.

The Herald Sun can reveal a Penfolds restaurant, rooftop wine bar, riverside terrace and Rockpool-Burnt Ends collaboration will headline a new dining precinct overlooking Garden Square.

“Atrium Eatery and Bar” by Ben Shewry, head chef of Attica — the 97th ranked best restaurant in the world — will take over River Terrace overlooking the Yarra.

And food from the likes of Grossi Florentino, Longrain, Ginger Boy, Tipo 00 and Lucy Liu will also be spread across the site.

Shane Delia, who will run Maha in the Superbox, said AO22 would be “the most important year yet” for Melbourne to show its culinary and sporting wares at the Open.

“AO22 is the big bang we all need to show the world that Victoria is open for business, offering a world class destination for major events, food, arts and culture,’’ he said.

“I love nothing more than being part of Melbourne, the tennis community, and our fantastic major events.

“If I can contribute something extraordinarily unique that helps lead to a successful event after a dark few years for the hospitality industry, then together we’ve achieved something truly special.”

The food footprint of the Open, from January 17-30, will cross Olympic Boulevard for “Glasshouse Dining with Guy Grossi’’ at Collingwood footy club’s home base.

With full crowds for the Open confirmed on Thursday, Tennis Australia in a statement said the “Happy Slam’’ would help Melbourne’s sports and event industry roaring back to life.

“Based on record-breaking pre-sales we expect tickets will be in high demand,’’ it said.

“The Australian Open is shaping up to be a spectacular event, and one that will signal the return of global sports and entertainment to Melbourne.’’

Tickets to the Open go on sale from noon Friday.
