Close friends of a woman allegedly killed by her ex-husband say police failed to protect her.

Mother-of-three Nelomie Perera, 43, was found dead in her Sandhurst home on Saturday after it is alleged her ex-husband Dinush Kurera fatally assaulted her.

The Herald Sun can reveal prior to the alleged attack, the Australian Federal Police had charged Mr Kurera with possessing two prohibited knuckledusters, contrary to the control of weapons act.

Ms Perera’s close friend Sanjani Gunaratne said the slain woman had told police she was in a life-threatening situation but they were unable to protect her.

“I am so disappointed they didn’t do anything about this,” Ms Gunaratne said.

“I want justice for Nelomie. I don’t wanna believe this news. Love her a lot and (am) going to miss her.”

Nelomie Perera was a mum of three.

Close friend Kylie Dunstan said Ms Perera had concerns about her safety for the past 12 months.

“The police knew what the situation was but kept saying (their) hands were tied,” friend Kylie Dunstan said.

“I’m so heartbroken.”

In a statement Victoria Police said: “This is a tragic event and, like with all homicides, the facts and circumstances will be examined as part of our investigation. We are unable to comment further as the matter is before the court.”

Domestic violence campaigners plan to gather at Ms Perera’s Wodalla Court home on Tuesday to mark White Ribbon day.

“Let’s gather to support a very beautiful soul who didn’t deserve to have her life tragically taken from her,” organiser Tanya Warakagoda said.

“No one deserves this. Nel was a friend of mine who was just trying to move on from a bad situation.

“I want Nel’s house to light up in as much white as possible to show our respect and support as a community to honour this beautiful human being.”

The pair’s 14-year-old son was also injured in the alleged attack.

On Monday night he remained at Frankston hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Other friends paid tribute online.

“This is absolutely heartbreaking,” Katrina McGinness said online.

“May she rest in peace and her kids find peace somehow.”

Mahsa Ali said: “You were the kindest person in the whole world. I miss you so much.”

Mr Kurera, 45, will next face court in April.
