Neale Daniher named Victorian of the Year for inspirational MND campaign

He’s inspired Victorians with his tireless efforts to raise awareness and find a cure for the disease that has changed many lives forever. Now Neale Daniher has been named Victorian of the Year.

Footy great Neale Daniher has been named the 2019 Victorian of the Year.

The award, recognising public and community service, was awarded to the former Essendon player for his tireless work advocating for Motor Neurone Disease.

Since his diagnosis in 2013, Mr Daniher has been instrumental in the Fight MND campaign which aims to find a cure for the debilitating illness.

An inspiration to many, Daniher is determined to live his life to the fullest despite his setbacks.

Today he said it was a “great honour” to be recognised.

“It’s a bit of a surprise. It’s a proud moment for my family and my wife Jan and I’m very honoured to be here and accept the award,” he said.

“All I can say is I’m very honoured to be Victorian of the year and I’ll do my very best to live up to this title.”

Daniher said the response to fundraisers such as the Big Freeze was heartwarming.

“It’s overwhelming to see the big freeze beanies and the Victorian public are very generous and I can’t thank them enough for their support,” he said.

“I’m very thankful for everyone that supports our cause which is to find a treatment and cue for MND. We haven’t found a cure yet but with the help of the community and government and I’m sure we will.”

Dr Skye Kinder was recognised as the Young Victorian of the Year for her medical work in rural and country communities.

The Waterwell Project, a health literacy program for refugees, asylum seekers and migrants was awarded Victorian Organisation of the Year.

And Channel 31, a Melbourne-based community television, received the Victoria Day Award for the Arts.
