Serious allegations of “inappropriate conduct” continue to mount against a teacher who was stood down from a Burwood Jewish school this month.

Jared Alford, a former director of student development who had worked at Mount Scopus Memorial College in Burwood for more than 20 years, suddenly left the school earlier this month after multiple former students came forward with allegations he behaved inappropriately towards them.

In a statement last week, Mount Scopus said additional disclosures had been received in recent days by former students describing conduct that was “clearly in breach” of the college’s Child Protection Policy.

“It is apparent that the former students who have come forward did not feel comfortable reporting inappropriate conduct at the time,” the school said in a statement.

“The college is deeply sorry that this was the experience of these students.”

The Herald Sun revealed earlier this month that a number of former students made a slew of complaints about a staff member who had previously engaged in “inappropriate conduct” with secondary students.

The school said it commended and thanked former students who had come forward, and strongly encouraged all students – past and present – to report any inappropriate conduct they have experienced or witnessed.

“We understand that some people might prefer to report to a person unconnected with the school, and we can advise that Marilyn Kraner, Manager Individual and Family Services at Jewish Care, has kindly agreed to receive reports.

“We will strive to ensure that students always feel empowered and encouraged to report any inappropriate conduct connected with the college and we will be commissioning an external review of our Child Protection policies and procedures for all areas of the school, including the Informal Education Department.”

Rabbi Kennard said this month the type of conduct was wholly unacceptable and had no place in any school setting.

“Following an independent investigation, the staff member no longer works at the college, and we have reported these matters to all the relevant authorities.

“If you have had a similar experience, the college extends to you its complete support and assistance.

“We sincerely thank the brave former students who have brought these matters to our attention.”
